What Happens After a Sexual Assault at a VA Medical Facility?

Last week the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report that accused the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Facilities of failing to properly report allegations of sexual assault.  The GAO found that 284 incidents of alleged sexual assault were reported between January 2007 and July 2010.  The allegations included rape, inappropriate touching, forceful medical examinations, forced oral sex and other types of forced sexual assault.  The report found that VA management and the VA inspector general were not always notified of the allegations and that cases were significantly underreported.

The VA and the House Committee on Veterans Affairs are both investigating the allegations and the House Committee has indicated that hearings will be held on this important issue that affects the health, safety and dignity of our nation’s veterans.
