The Truth About Hospital Medication Errors

 PA medication mistakes

In June 2010, the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority published an article about hospital mediation errors.  According to the article, the storage of medication is an important piece in protecting patient safety.

Medication storage was reported as a contributing factor to medication errors in more than 200 cases between June 2004 and October 2009.  More than two thirds of these errors reached the patient.  In almost half of the cases that reached the patient, the wrong drug was administered to the patient – a circumstance that can easily lead to catastrophic results.  One quarter of the patients who were administered the wrong drug required additional medical treatment as a direct result of the medical error.

To combat this problem, the Patient Safety Authority recommends that hospitals implement a well organized drug storage system based on where the medication is kept. For example, different systems are necessary for patient care areas and for pharmacies.
