The Most Important Thing That You Can Bring to the Hospital

If you are going in to the hospital for a planned procedure then you are likely considering what to bring with you.  Will you feel up to reading a book or doing a little work? Should you bring your good slippers?

What you decide to bring with you is largely a personal choice. However, there is one thing that almost everyone entering the hospital should consider bringing with them and that is an advocate.  An advocate may be a family member, a friend, or even a hired consultant who is going to be responsible for listening carefully to what doctors, nurses, and hospital staff members say to you and to what they do.  An advocate is someone who is going to do his or her best to make sure that your needs are met and that negligent mistakes are avoided.

Don’t put yourself at unnecessary risk of suffering a serious medical mistake. Instead, ask someone whom you trust to come with you and advocate for your needs during your hospital stay.
