The Lingering Effects of Pennsylvania Hospital Infections

A new report from the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council has found that if you get an infection while in a Pennsylvania hospital then there is a good chance that you will still have the infection when you are discharged and there is a 30% chance that you will be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days because of the infection.

According to the report, more than 23,000 people acquired infections while in Pennsylvania hospitals during 2009.  The health care industry has a goal of zero infections while in the hospital because of the danger to patients and the added costs to the health care system.

The Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council is urging Pennsylvania hospitals to make sure that everyone is following protocols to avoid infections.  The agency anticipates releasing a more detailed report about the infection rate at specific Pennsylvania hospitals in the future.
