Study Finds Children May Not Get Diabetes Care They Need

A study released last month found that children and young adults with diabetes may not be getting the proper medical tests needed to appropriately manage their conditions.  The study of about 1,500 children and young people with diabetes found that about one third of those studied did not have the eye exams and long term blood sugar test (A1C) as often as suggested by the American Diabetes Association.

It is unclear why children and young adults are not getting the diabetes care that they need.  Some potential reasons include lack of health insurance, noncompliance among young adults whose parents can no longer require them to get medical care, change in doctors, and lack of awareness among pediatricians and family care doctors as compared to endocrinologists.

Do you have a child, or are you a young adult, with diabetes? Have you found it difficult to get the necessary care?
