Should Pennsylvania Dentists be Required to Carry Malpractice Insurance?

While most dentists purchase malpractice insurance, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania does not currently require dentists to carry malpractice insurance.  That may soon change.

A state senator has introduced legislation that would make dental malpractice insurance mandatory for Pennsylvania dentists.  The bill was reportedly introduced in response to allegations of patient abuse in Berks County and other parts of the state.

The Senate has unanimously approved the bill which would require dentists to purchase liability insurance of at least $3 million each year.  The bill will now proceed to the house for a vote.

What do you think?  Is mandatory dental malpractice insurance in the amount specified in this bill a good idea for Pennsylvania?
