How Noisy is Your Operating Room?

Your list of questions to ask your surgeon is probably already long.  You may want to know about the procedure, the potential risks, and the surgeon’s experience, for example.  However, there are also other, less obvious, questions that you might want answered before anesthesia is administered.

Specifically, a recent study suggests that you might want to ask the surgeon about noise in the operating room.  The study published in the British Journal of Surgery found that noise in the operating room could be linked to infections.

While it is too early to tell whether a reduction in noise will be successful in significantly reducing surgical site infections, it is something that should be monitored and may improve surgical outcomes.
