How Common are Hospital Readmissions in Southeastern PA?

In 2009, there were 21,688 readmissions to Southeastern Pennsylvania hospitals because of complications or infections, according to a recent Hospital Performance Report by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council.  The report indicates that the cost of these readmissions exceeded $1 billion and resulted in approximately 150,000 hospital days.

While not all of these readmissions were due to medical malpractice, some were caused by medical errors.  For those patients and their families, the dangers of readmissions go beyond the number of days in the hospital and the dollar amount related to their recovery. For these individuals, readmission often means physical pain, financial loss and emotional suffering.
