Does Your Hospital Use a Surgery Checklist?

Several studies have indicated that medical errors can be prevented when hospitals use surgery checklists.  Yet, according to a recent news report only about 25% of U.S. hospitals are currently using one of the three surgery checklists that have been proven to prevent medical mistakes.

It seems logical that hospitals would want to adopt a surgical checklist in order to prevent both medical mistakes and medical malpractice claims.  It is unclear why the majority of hospitals in the United States are hesitant to adopt such checklists.  However, it is clear that if you are going in for a planned surgery, or if your loved one is going in for an unplanned surgery, that you should ask whether the hospital uses  surgical checklists to prevent surgical errors.
