Does it Matter Where Your Doctor Went to School?

A recent study completed by the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research, based in Philadelphia, found that it might matter where your doctor went to school.  The researchers looked at more than 244,000 patients who were hospitalized in Pennsylvania for heart failure or heart attacks between 2003 – 2006.

The researchers found that while there was no significant risk to patients of foreign born doctors who attended foreign medical schools, there may be an increased risk to patients of U.S. born doctors who attended foreign medical schools.

U.S. born doctors who attended foreign medical schools had higher in hospital death rates of patients than foreign born doctors who attended foreign medical schools.

As always, it is important to consider the ability of each doctor individually when choosing a physician for yourself or for a loved one so that you get the best possible care and avoid being the victim of medical malpractice.
