Common Medical Misdiagnoses

As part of a recent Patient Safety Advisory issued by the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority, the Patient Safety Authority looked at studies that identified the most common types of misdiagnoses.

The Patient Safety Authority recognized studies that found:

  • 59% of misdiagnoses in ambulatory care settings are related to the misdiagnosis of cancer;
  • In emergency rooms, the top three conditions that are misdiagnosed are fractures (19%), infections (15%), and myocardial infractions (10%); and
  • Cancer is a commonly misdiagnosed condition across medical settings.

The failure to properly diagnosis cancer or other conditions can have devastating – even fatal – effects.  If you have suffered a medical problem, or lost a loved one, due to the failure to properly diagnosis a condition then please contact a Pennsylvania medical malpractice lawyer for more information about your rights.
