Can You Get Meningitis from a Mosquito?

Summer came early to Pennsylvania this year.  We had one of the warmest Junes on record and with those record warm temperatures came all of the perils of summer including mosquitoes that are already testing positive for the West Nile Virus.

Though the majority of people who contract West Nile do not suffer from meningitis, a minority of people do develop this serious infection from a simple mosquito bite.  Meningitis is most effectively treated when it is diagnosed right away.  A failure to diagnose meningitis can lead to serious complications or fatalities.

If you, or a loved one, experiences any of the symptoms of meningitis such as severe headaches, fever, vomiting, a stiff neck, seizures, joint pain or a purple rash then you should seek immediate medical care and urge your doctor to evaluate you for meningitis.  Do not stop questioning your doctor until a definitive diagnosis has been made.  Your persistence may save your life.
